The Stories We Could Tell

Durango, CO… A little slice of heaven right here on Earth

We love Durango. We keep extending our stay, and we may just never leave. There is so much to do here, the weather is great (snow last week, but we made it here just in time to enjoy temps in the mid-70s), and the people are super friendly. We have so much to tell you that we are going to have to break it down into multiple posts!

The first activity we did was to take a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad. We received many suggestions that we do this, but we had no idea we were in for such a special day! The train takes you on a 3.5 hour ride to Silverton where you have 2 hours to explore before heading back to Durango. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face the entire day. The scenery is stupendous. Amazing. Most of the land is only accessible by train so the terrain is untouched and beautiful. Waterfalls, a heard of elk, canyons, and huge rapids entertained us the whole way. The host in our car was hilarious and recounted tales of 30 plus years of train rides (including one where a European woman unexpectedly removed her blouse). Luckily everyone in our car stayed fully clothed!

Silverton is an adorable, yet touristy little town. Picture fudge shops on every corner. We hunted down the only brewery in the village and tasted a few of their microbrews. They told us that almost their entire staff had unexpectedly quit that day, so they were extra slammed. We thought about offering our services to get a little extra cash for the road, but decided to take the train back instead. Maybe next time. : )

  1. James and Bria – You were lucky the weather was so nice. When Ken and I went on the train ride, there was still snow along the sides of the tracks and in Silverton, covering the mountains. The weather was freezing and we went to a restaurant there – something Bear, I think was the name – and had the best bowl of hot soup. It was sleeting when our train pulled out and snowed on us part of the way back to Durango. We didn’t have hosts in our rail cars either – that sounds like a plus!

  3. Glad you’re having fun in Durango. Ken and I moved our friends from Big Bear there in the late 80’s and we’ve been back many times. We also moved friends from here to Ridgeway, which is a neat spot(kind of?) too. We have pictures taken in the same exact spot above Silverton, 5 years in a row!! Also, many years ago, Grampa took his fam to Silverton(on our way to Kansas)we caught fish in the little lake and the restaurant fried them for us,yum. Great memories. You two look so darling and happy. Love your blog, it’s so fun to follow along. Love you sooxxoo
