Durango, CO… A little slice of heaven right here on Earth

We love Durango. We keep extending our stay, and we may just never leave. There is so much to do here, the weather is great (snow last week, but we made it here just in time to enjoy temps in the mid-70s), and the people are super friendly. We have so much to tell you that we are going to have to break it down into multiple posts!

The first activity we did was to take a ride on the Narrow Gauge Railroad. We received many suggestions that we do this, but we had no idea we were in for such a special day! The train takes you on a 3.5 hour ride to Silverton where you have 2 hours to explore before heading back to Durango. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face the entire day. The scenery is stupendous. Amazing. Most of the land is only accessible by train so the terrain is untouched and beautiful. Waterfalls, a heard of elk, canyons, and huge rapids entertained us the whole way. The host in our car was hilarious and recounted tales of 30 plus years of train rides (including one where a European woman unexpectedly removed her blouse). Luckily everyone in our car stayed fully clothed!

Silverton is an adorable, yet touristy little town. Picture fudge shops on every corner. We hunted down the only brewery in the village and tasted a few of their microbrews. They told us that almost their entire staff had unexpectedly quit that day, so they were extra slammed. We thought about offering our services to get a little extra cash for the road, but decided to take the train back instead. Maybe next time. : )
