The Stories We Could Tell

Toto… we’re not in California anymore

Picture this…. We are on our way to beautiful Mesa Verde National Park. Crossing through a small town about 15 minutes from the park we had our first out-of-California experience. We drive up to a stoplight… nothing odd here. Until a woman in a horse trailer pulls half way into the intersection and starts waving a red flag. We had NO idea what was going on. Why was this crazy woman blocking the intersection and what did the flag mean? Perplexed, we sat at the intersection not knowing whether to proceed forward or call 9-1-1 because this crazy lady was blocking our way. Slowly we hear a clopping noise. It gets louder, and louder, and louder. Until before we know it a herd of (I kid you not) 1,000 cattle are crossing the intersection in front of us. Mothers, babies, cows with full udders, cows with stomach-aches. We saw it all. The whole thing took about 20 minutes. The grand finale came when several stragglers had fallen back. A cow stopped right in the intersection, turned to the dawdlers and cried “mooooooo” which really sounded like “moooooove” to us. We couldn’t stop laughing. Welcome to Colorado Clarks. Glad to be here.

  1. Loving this. Hope you come across lots more “out of California” experiences like this. We have such a wonderful country and I’m glad you’re getting to experience it.
