The Stories We Could Tell

Portland: Japanese Gardens

They say that the Portland Japanese Garden is one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan, so I had to take a look. Being that James had already suffered through our visit to Buchart Gardens, I let him take a bye.

I have never been to Japan, so I am a poor judge regarding the garden’s authenticity, but I can attest to its beauty. Walking solitary through the gardens was a relaxing, meditative experience. It had rained for most of the day so the crowds stayed away. The air was damp and warm and it was hazy. The gardens offer plenty of intimate spaces to sit and ponder (I wished I had brought a journal or book, but I will save that for next time). The trees make a lovely canopy, and the running water from small waterfalls and streams make this spot truly serene. I would like to see Japan one day, but if I can’t, I will happily return to the Portland Japanese Garden to relish in its peaceful beauty.
