The Stories We Could Tell

Portland, OR: Saturday Market & Art on the Pearl

Portland is well known for its distinctive Saturday Market (which I think should be renamed Weekend Market because we went on a Sunday, but anyway…) On this trip we have been to many farmer’s and weekend markets, but this really was something special. Not only did it have a great open-air arts and crafts market with delicious food, but it also had many unique personalities to add to the scene. Men playing drums on buckets; a man preaching religion; a man playing accordion and harmonica while encouraging young children to dance; and even a lady that told James she was going to arrest him for being too handsome (I agree, he is ridiculously good looking, but the compliment was a little lessened when she then asked for money for a mystery charity). I even got into the spirit with a henna tattoo – racy!

We decided we were still craving culture, so we walked up the street to see Art on the Pearl, an annual art show in the Pearl District. The show boasted lots of beautiful art of many different styles. There were also demo booths were you could learn about all types of art from glass blowing to iron work. My favorite part was watching a group of kids paint a car. That paint job was for charity, but those creative lil darlings better stay away from our ride!
