The Stories We Could Tell

Base to Summit

Yesterday we did a grueling hike from the base to the summit of Bald Mountain (at over 9,000 feet). The hike was 5.2 miles – doesn’t sound too bad… but factor in 3400 feet in elevation gain and you’ve got yourself a hell of a hike. The terrain on the trail was really interesting. It quickly changes from dense forest to dry grasslands. We heard that is because the pine trees thrive on the shaded slopes… but we aren’t entirely sure. Whatever the reason, the dichotomy was striking. It took us two and half hours, and we were pretty beat at the end! To get down you can either hike your way to the base, or take a chair lift and a gondola. We opted for the chair lift/gondola. The fine folks in Sun Valley even let you ride for free because they believe if you hiked up, you deserve the reward -whoohoo $40 saved!

  1. Hi!
You’re getting closer! Should we dust the guest room & wash the guest bedding?? We will be gone 8/10-15 (in Leadville, CO). Would be fun to see you! And meet your bride! = )

  2. Sounds like a robust hike. Ken and his buds ride motortcycles all over that area, and love it. While in Ketchum,be sure to go to the Pioneer Saloon for dinner, sooooo yummy, and while in Hailey, have breakfast or lunch at Shorty’s, just a fun diner with great food. xxoo
