5 Millions Dogs and Cats Die in Shelters Each Year…

Have you ever heard the phrase: “Don’t breed or buy while shelter pets die?” Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah is helping to make sure that less pets die in shelters every year. Hundreds of homeless and unwanted dogs, cats, horses, pigs, bunnies, and birds call this place home. They are the lucky ones. Best Friends is a “no-kill” animal shelter so many of those animals will live out the rest of their lives at the sanctuary. We had the pleasure of touring Best Friends – even Tuck got to come along! We were greatly impressed with the living conditions and the level of care that the animals receive. Cats and dogs have indoor and outdoor living areas with plenty of toys. They are well equipped to care for all types of special needs animals – they even took on all of Michael Vick’s dogs (most have been rehabilitated and adopted). They care for the animals in Utah, but also focus on these initiatives: fighting puppy mills, restoring the image of pitbulls (an issue close to our hearts, RIP Elvis), keeping cats safe and out of shelters, and finding “forever homes” for adopted animals.

Their efforts have really paid off… since they opened their doors in the late ’80s, 12 million fewer cats and dogs have been euthanized in shelters across America! Keep up the good work!

We can’t say enough about this amazing organization. Please have your pet spayed or neutered so that one day, there won’t be a need for shelters. Find out what you can do in your community to help, make a donation, or just enjoy looking at all the cute pups and kittens at the shelter. We happened to pass a sign in the middle of Utah advertising land for $50/acre. Maybe it’s time to buy some of that land and open an animal sanctuary of our own…?
