The Stories We Could Tell

$25 Beer

So, we failed to mention we had a $25 beer on the 4th of July. It was big…24oz but still, it was $25. Said beer was procured from the Odell brewery in Ft Collins. Before we left Santa Barbara I noticed a growing number of these types of beers at our local upscale market, Lazy Acres. I tried one which was a $12, 24oz barley wine and I didn’t like it enough to purchase a second but I (James) figured I’d give it a go in Ft Collins. Anyway, as we mentioned the Odell tour was great and we tasted a flight of good beers so we decided to purchase a few items from the store. Long story short, before completing our purchase we pointed to a 24oz corked beer in the fridge behind the cash register (no price shown) and it ended up adding $25 to our tab that day. I went back to verify that, in fact, it was properly rung up and it cost $25 for one, single 24oz bottle. The man nodded yes and I remembered the words of the tour guide, that this was a beer for “special occassions”…indeed. So, we decided to save it for the 4th of July…seemed appropriate.

The short version of the beer review is that as far as beers go this one is weird. I think that is mainly because there is so much more fermentation going on that it doesn’t really taste much like a beer. So strong and so many intense flavors. Requires small sips. More like a wine. It was like they fermented raisin juice and then aged it in oak bourbon barrels then carbonated the result. Sounds awful but it actually tasted pretty good. Just not like beer. It exists in a universe somewhere between some exotic sparkling wine (like a sparkling Shiraz our friend makes which is delicious…thanks Dave) and a heavy beer. I won’t be ordering any for special delivery to the RV parks but if someone had a bottle and offered me a small glass I would gladly accept. Good in small doses.

$25 beer, hot dogs, mac 'n' cheese. Happy Birthday America!
