The Stories We Could Tell

Carlsbad… come for the Caverns, stay for the???

We are going to be totally honest. The town of Carlsbad, NM left something to be desired. We tried to like it – we went “downtown,” we walked around the “beach” at the Pecos river – but Carlsbad just didn’t really do it for us.

The Caverns though – they are a different story. What an amazing experience. We could only imagine what the first Native Americans that approached the gaping hole in the Earth thought. By the end of our descent we were 750 feet below ground. The best description we have read of the caverns: they are a “magical subterranean world.” The Big Room is larger than eight football fields – remember this is all deep under ground! Awe-inspiring to say the least. Nature is pretty amazing.

The photos below wold have been taken in pitch black darkness if not for some thoughtfully placed lighting by the National Park Service.
